Maps

In addition to the
M-711 series in 1 : 50 000, we recommend the
"Saltfjellkartet ", or
Saltfjellet Map in 1 : 100 000,
which shows all the T-marked routes and cabins. In addition the map indicates the borders of all the national parks, protected areas and sanctuaries, of which you should be well aware when hiking in the mountains. Strict regulations apply, although you are generally free to walk and tent wherever you like.

In Norway there is a law know as Allemannsretten or "Everyone's Right". This law guarantees that everyone has the right to wander freely where they will, in the mountains, in the woods, or, as we say in Norway, in the ut-mark. You can also set up a tent and camp anywhere you like as long as it is not closer than 150 m to any house or cabin.

In spring, summer and winter, it is not lawful to walk across farm fields, or inn-mark, as these restricted areas are called.

For more information about fishing permits and other pertinent details consult a map, or check with a Tourist Information Office.

Note: Spelling of place names may vary from map to map. This is especially true of the Samish (Samiske) place and cabin names around the Sulitjelma area. It also applies to Norwegian vs. Swedish spellings.
